Country music in New Jersey might sound like a contradiction at first—more turnpikes than tumbleweeds—but the Garden State has a surprisingly rich, if often overlooked, country music history. It’s less about cowboy boots in wide-open plains and more about honky-tonk spirit tucked between diners, shore towns, and working-class roots.
It really starts in the early-to-mid 20th century, when country music was spreading up the East Coast via radio – and New Jersey picked up that signal loud and clear. By the 1940s and ’50s, local bars and dance halls began hosting country acts, especially in rural South Jersey and along the Delaware River.
By the 1970’s New Jersey had developed a steady circuit of country-friendly venues that attracted names like Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, who brought country hits like (“Hey Good Lookin’”) (“Ring of Fire”) and (“Folsom Prison Blues”) to the Garden State.
The door was opened for others like, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Garth Brooks, (“Friends in Low Places”), Reba Mcintyre, Zach Bryan and many more to come rushing in.
Today country acts are still welcomed to the Garden State, and in greater numbers than ever, as venues large and small feature live country music all around New Jersey. Together with the local original and cover bands that sustain a vibrant and thriving, local country music community that is 100% Jersey Strong.
Southbound 95 is proud to become a part of that rich tradition as they debut their mix of edgy classic and modern country covers on Sunday May 3rd, 2026 at Tequilla Grill and Bar – 150 US-206 in Hillsborough Township NJ
