Country music has always had a thing for what’s in the glass. Whether it’s a dive bar, a road house or a packed summer festival, drinks aren’t just props—they tell the story.
So what feels more “country”—tequila or whiskey?
If you go old school, it’s whiskey all day… all night… the next morning…
Whiskey is baked into the foundation of country music. It fits the mood, the heartbreak, the regret, and the hard truths. (“Whiskey River”) by Willie Nelson, is all about using whiskey to outrun your problems. Then you’ve got (“Tennessee Whiskey”) first recorded by David Alan Coe in 1981 followed by George Jones in 1983 and most recently by Chris Stapleton in 2015. The song flips things a bit. Here, whiskey isn’t sad—it’s smooth, comforting, even romantic. Same drink, totally different vibe. That’s kind of whiskey’s role in country music: it’s the slow burn, it’s for settin’, sippin’ and sulkin’
Tequila, though, tells a different story. Tequila feels more modern – a little less tied to tradition. It shows up in songs built for Friday night’s instead of a lonely Tuesday. (“Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off”) by Joe Nichols is exactly what it sounds like: fun, a little ridiculous, and not taking itself too seriously. And then there’s (“Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home)”) by Elle King and Miranda Lambert, which is basically a full-on party anthem—no overthinking, just turn it up and go. (“Tequila Sheila”) by Bobby Bare is a creature all its own blending classic country with a fun modern vibe, the song calls up images of gunfighters and outlaws on the run.
So what actually represents country music better? If you’re talking about the classic sound, the storytelling, and emotional gut punches—whiskey still owns it. But for those bigger, louder, chaotic, party nights it’s Tequila all the way. At the end of the day, country music needs both, Tequila and Whiskey.
…And so do you.
